The Hanger Project is excited to offer, for a limited time only and by bespoke commission, custom cufflinks designed by Permanent Style writer Simon Compton as part of our new Special Projects Series. They are also available with an optional set of matching studs. In a quest for the perfect classic men’s cufflink, Simon approached London-based bespoke jeweler Diana Maynard for help.
Simon’s complaints with most cufflinks available today are the following:
1. They do not have significant decoration on both sides of the link (and they should);
2. Those that do are too long n the bar or chain that joins them;
3. Those without the cheap, rotating bar design are difficult to push through the cuffs; and
4. Few designs are attractive, yet simple and conservative enough to wear with tailored clothing.
In short, cufflinks today are not designed and crafted to the same standards of those of yesteryear. (This, basically, sums up the most significant trend in men’s clothing of the last two decades, but, as my customers, this obviously doesn’t apply to you).
All cufflinks should have some sort of decoration on both sides as, until recently, has always been the custom. Anything different is a compromise in style for the sake of saving money.
Cufflinks that are joined on both sides are normally done so either with a bar or, more commonly, a chain. These are difficult to get through the cuff but, more importantly, are much longer than, say, a silk knot.
Silk knots, as we all know, are increasingly worn because they are cheap, readily available, and a nice way to add a touch of color. However, they grip the cuff tightly and result in the cuff fitting much too tight – by up to 5/8 of an inch. For anyone that has their shirts made, that’s a lot and undermines the point of having one’s cuffs made to fit at all.
Finally, the available decorations leave a lot to be desired. Why a man would wear humorous cuff links is beyond both Simon and me; branded logos are a little better; crests are fine but nothing exciting. Some brands do a nice job in lapis lazuli or mother of pearl, but they fall down on points #2 and #3 above. And because these stones are so common, Simon deliberately avoided them altogether.
First, the link that joins the two sides has been extensively tested to determine its length. Not too short yet not too long. It grips both sides of the cuff effectively and sits neatly. Your cuffs will not pucker with these cuff links.
Next, the stones on each side are identical and as big as possible while remaining easy to punch through the cuff. Again, after extensive testing, Simon settled on 10 mm.
Finally, Pearls were chosen. Whether white or grey, they are simple yet sophisticated and look particularly good on white shirts.
These cufflinks are exclusively made-to-order by Diana. Once we stop taking orders, that will be it. They will take approximately four weeks to make, with delivery an additional two weeks. We will post these via Express Mail to the United States and then distribute directly to you thereafter.
Technical Details:
- The pearls are cultured freshwater pearls, in white, grey and peacock measuring approximately 10 mm in diameter.
- The silver stems are circular
- The silver is all hallmarked at London’s assay office.
- The silver is polished and rhodium-plated to prevent tarnishing
- The optional set of studs is sold in a set of 4
