About John Laing Knitwear

John Laing was founded as a family business in Scotland in 1831 by Major John Laing, based in Hawick in the Scottish Borders.

Over the decades, cashmere yarn became an increasingly important element of the John Laing product range and the company’s reputation for quality rapidly expanded to include knitwear which could only be described as “luxurious.” John Laing is the oldest Scottish knitwear brand still being manufactured in Scotland today and it continues to be renowned for its cashmere knitwear quality and design.

Widely considered one of the best knitters in the world, John Laing eschews the substandard methods many other makers now use to impart “instant luxury.” Instead, the company relies on time-tested traditional methods that have made its Scottish cashmere garments worthy of investment and sought out by discriminating individuals and luxury houses around the world. In fact, John Laing is behind the knitwear quality for which some of the most prestigious luxury houses in the world are known.

John Laing’s reputation for and dedication to the utmost in quality promises to continue for generations, as the company set up a training school in 2012 to ensure that the key hand-skill operations used in manufacturing its garments are retained. The training school more than doubled in size between 2012-2014 and will continue to grow to ensure the future for what is a very important part of Scottish heritage.

As they have done for generations in the Scottish Borders, John Laing avoids the substandard methods many other makers now use to impart “instant luxury.” Instead, these rollnecks are a return to the legendary heirloom-quality Scottish cashmere knitwear of yore and will be enjoyed by both men and women for generations to come.
